OTS Newsletter - Fall 2008Straus-Amiel Alumnus Installed as Chief Rabbi of Sweden"
In a festive ceremony in Stockholm this past May, Rabbi Yitzhak Nachman, a graduate of the Joseph and Gwendolyn Straus Rabbinical Seminary’s Straus-Amiel Program, was installed as the new chief rabbi of Sweden.
Rabbi Nachman, an educator and sociologist who grew up in Stockholm, was sent to Israel by the 20,000-member Jewish community to prepare for his challenging new role. While studying for rabbinic ordination in Jerusalem, Rabbi Nachman gained practical rabbinic skills at Straus-Amiel for serving a modern, heterogeneous Jewish community. Speaking at the ceremony, Straus-Amiel director Rabbi Eliahu Birnbaum praised Rabbi Nachman’s accomplishments as a Torah scholar and pledged that OTS faculty would continue to be available to assist the new rabbi in negotiating the complex issues of leading a community.
