OTS Newsletter - Fall 2006

Photos

Longtime Midreshet Lindenbaum teacher Shani Taragin (left), recognized worldwide as a scholar but even more so as a beloved educator, has been appointed “Rosh Beit Midrash” of the Midreshet Lindenbaum study hall, beginning in the Fall of 2006. In her new capacity, Shani will continue to teach, inspire and provide direction for all students and faculty.

Have Pizza, Will Travel: Although many residents of the North fled their homes, many had no option but to stay put. “It is these people, confined to their bomb shelters, who need the most help,” declared Rabbi Joel Zeff, director of the OTS Max and Gianna Glassman Center for Humanity. Zeff has been traveling throughout the north, distributing toys and games for the children and special deliveries of pizza for shelter inhabitants and soldiers on duty. “The Center for Humanity is obviously concerned with humanitarian issues,” he explained. “We view this as an act of tikkun olam in its most basic sense.”

A special benefit performance of the acclaimed Gesher Theater production of “Momik” raised funds for the Poland Scholarship Fund, which helps OTS ensure that no high school student is denied participation in the formative class heritage trip for lack of financial resources. At the event, OTS also paid tribute to a number of outstanding faculty members and staff. Pictured: Tova Rhein, director of the Maria and Joel Finkle Overseas Program at Midreshet Lindenbaum, accepts an award from Rabbi Riskin and Dr. Roy Stern, Chairman of the Board, in recognition of the “incredible efficiency, always-pleasant disposition and endless devotion which she brings to her job.”

Avishai Beychok receives his diploma from Rabbi Yaacov Fisher, Principal of Neveh Shmuel Yeshiva High School for Boys in Efrat. A total of 385 seniors graduated from OTS’ six high schools in Jerusalem and Gush Etzion.

Mr. Stanley and Mrs. Raine Silverstein visit the Chana and Yaacov Tilles Campus in Jerusalem, home to the Midreshet Lindenbaum Women’s College and the Monica Dennis Goldberg School of Women Advocates. The Silversteins dedicated the campus in memory of Raine’s parents, who embodied the paramount Jewish values of family, tradition and faith.
